Māori and Pacific peoples are often grouped together in workplace diversity and inclusion programmes. This has become a common practice across Aotearoa, shaped by shared barriers to equity and a history of marginalisation within systems.
However, while Māori and Pacific peoples may face similar challenges, the reasons behind those challenges and the most effective solutions are not always the same. Grouping them together can risk oversimplifying distinct cultural identities, histories and needs. It can also lead to workplace strategies that fail to fully support either group.
In this Diversity Session webinar, our panel will explore:
- Why Māori and Pacific peoples are often combined in workplace inclusion efforts and where this tendency comes from
- The similarities and differences in workplace experiences and what this means for designing inclusive solutions
- How a more nuanced approach can support cultural authenticity, belonging and equity
- Links to cultural accommodations and what meaningful inclusion looks like in action
Diversity Sessions are interactive online conversations designed to deepen our understanding of inclusion issues affecting our organisations and our people.
Join us as we examine this important topic and reflect on how organisations can move beyond a one-size-fits-all approach to honour both shared struggles and distinct identities.
