The biggest barriers to equal and equitable employment are not always visible. They are built into the organisational structures that decide who gets access to opportunity. Awareness and training may increase understanding and change attitudes, but if the structures remain the same, the barriers are very hard to shift.
This session will explore lessons learned from organisations that went after the structures successfully to increase gender inclusion. Then we will consider how we can use those learnings to break down barriers for other under-represented groups in the workplace.
Winners from the 2026 Diversity Awards NZ will walk through how they found those points of inequity and rebuilt around them: the assumptions they tested, the processes they changed, and the parts that are still hard.
In this discussion, we view workforce participation and opportunity as outcomes shaped by organisational structures. This makes it easier to identify points in processes where access is not equal, regardless of the dimension of inclusion being considered.
Diversity Sessions are interactive online conversations designed to deepen our understanding of inclusion issues affecting our organisations and our people.
